VN ripe for boom in direct marketing

Media Post is a joint stock company set up by the Viet Nam Post and La Poste (French-based company) to do business in direct advertising mail services in Viet Nam. Viet Nam News spoke to Philippe Martin, general director of Media Post JSC, about the potential of the domestic direct marketing market.

Could you tell us about the company's operations?
Media Post was set up in 2008 as a joint stock company by three shareholders: La Poste (France), Viet Nam Post and Smart Media (Viet Nam). The company's total charter capital is US$1 million with 60 per cent contributed by the Vietnamese partners.
Media Post operates in direct marketing mail and advertising mail (with or without addresses) nationwide. Media Post consults, designs products and provides hybrid mail services combining communication technology with normal mail, data base management services, data base and catalogue designing services for enterprises.
At the moment, direct marketing services is considered a very new field in Viet Nam so we are focusing on providing printed media and delivering advertisements for companies and individuals with catalogues, fliers and newsletters.
The company provides customers with all services related to their advertising campaign in one package.
How would you assess the domestic competition in this field? What challenges or difficulties have you faced?
I think that the market will develop quickly as all media, such as the internet, broadcast and television, have been growing very fast.
However, Vietnamese companies doing business in the direct marketing field are mostly small so they cannot provide services nationwide at the same time. It is true that under-developed advertising mail transfer system in Viet Nam imposed difficulties for Media Post when joining the Vietnamese market. However direct mail is one of the most successful services of French Post, therefore we hope to successfully apply our experience in Viet Nam.
Taking advantage of the Viet Nam Post, we are able to deliver unaddressed catalogues of 1.3 million items every month nationwide.
We also found several difficulties regarding printing shop capabilities because big printing factories are mainly located in large cities. Therefore, we have to transport ordered items from big cities to smaller cities and provinces.
Expensive materials on the domestic market, such as paper (20 per cent higher than that of Europe), are also challenging.
What are your business plans for the near future?
We have signed an agreement with the Viet Nam Post under which we are aiming at more big customers, such as supermarkets and credit institutions. We expect to increase volume by 20-25 per cent this year.
Media Post will apply service management technology which is successfully operating in France. All data will be posted electronically to the printer nearest the distributor. Therefore, customers can save time and transport costs.
