Investment certificates were granted for 21 projects worth a total of more than VND12.2 trillion (US$571.4 million) and three investment co-operation agreements were signed worth a total of VND2 trillion ($95.2 million).
The forum was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong and around 500 other participants including foreign and domestic investors; represent-atives from different economic sectors, ministries and international organisations, and diplomats.
They were shown the investment opportunities and economic potential of 12 north-western provinces as well as western Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces during the one-day conference.
Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong said the northern midland and mountainous region had the potential to develop. In recent times, the Vietnamese Government had developed policies to support the region and thanks to that, it had made a lot of progress, he added.
However this potential had not been effectively exploited due to many difficult conditions, he said.
"This forum is a good chance for investors, organisations and managers to meet and exchange experience so that they can find a suitable model for their co-operations," Trong said.
Speaking at the forum, Trong said that the Vietnamese Government and provincial authorities would continue to implement administrative reforms while perfecting policies to effectively exploit investment.
Participants also discussed the development of infrastructure for the region's key transport routes and the processing of agro-forestry products yesterday afternoon.
A report by the Ministry of Planning and Investment said the north-western region was one of the most disadvantaged in the country due to poor infrastructure.
Up to October this year, 253 projects with total registered capital of $1.53 billion had been implemented in the region.
Foreign investment to the region was mostly poured into the processing industry, agro-forestry and aquaculture, the manufacturing industry and the service sector.
A similar forum in northern Lao Cai Province in 2008 attracted around the same number of participants, and 13 projects received investment certificates worth $3 billion.
