Ministry announces year's 10 top ten events

1. Viet Nam plans ICT future
In September, the Prime Minister approved a plan to make Viet Nam a strong Information Technology – Communications (ICT) country. Under the plan, the Government will promote information technology by focusing on developing IT human resources and telecommunications broadband infrastructure. The Government will also work towards building the country's ICT market.
2. Assembly passes Postal Law 
 A new Postal Law, approved in June, will come into effect on January 1.
The new law will ensure transparent and consistent policies for postal, telecommunications and information technology services, and journalism.
The law will also help Viet Nam integrate into the international community.
3. National Assembly establishes regional and remote information program
In November, the National Assembly introduced a national programme aimed at bringing IT to mountainous, remote, border and island areas.
The aim of the programme is to boost economic development and raise life quality for people living in these areas while ensuring security and national defence.
The programme will also provide public telecommunications services and is expected to be implemented in 250 districts and 3,000 communes. A total of 1,700 remote communes will receive priority over the next four years. Communications staff will be trained and better ITC systems will be installed.
4. Telecoms companies become leading taxpayers
On September 23, Viet Nam Report JSC in collaboration with VietnamNet (an online newspaper) published results ranking top 1,000 top payers of corporate income tax in Viet Nam. MobiFone became the leading taxpayer with nearly VND6 trillion (US$279 million), followed by military-run Viettel Corporation (Viettel).
This year, despite difficulties, telecommunications and information technology companies have continued to invest in their infrastructure. Telecommunications providers saw a 57.2 per-cent year-on-year increase in their revenues.
5. Government enhances management of internet and online gaming business
To limit the harmful effects of online games, the Ministry of Information and Communications and departments nationwide introduced several measures to improve management of online gaming.
The Ministry now requires businesses to boost domestic production of online games with ‘healthy content' to change social perceptions about online gaming.
This year also saw the founding of Viet Nam's Internet Association in June.
6. Information security gets priority treatment
For the first time, the Ministry of Information and Communications warned people about information security.
The announcement was part of the "National Viet Nam Safety Information Day". The ministry aims to raise public awareness about information security. They also want to promote the use of information technology security. This will help the State agencies manage and develop policies and regulations on information security.
7. Largest International Book Fair
In September, the 3rd Exhibition – International Book Fair coincided with the celebration of 1,000 years of Thang Long – Ha Noi. This exhibition was the largest ever with 230 booths displaying and selling millions of books and cultural items from the city.
8. Vietnam holds ASEAN photo, documentary film and reportage festival
This year Viet Nam played hosts to the first ASEAN photo, documentary and reportage festival. The event attracted nearly 7,000 entries from photographers, reporters, press agencies and film makers from ASEAN member countries.
9. Inaugural spring newspaper festival in Paris
In February, the Viet Nam and France Cultural Centre in Paris hosted the first spring newspaper festival. More than 680 publications from 400 presses were on show at the event which heralded Viet Nam's further integration in the international communications arena.
10. Viet Nam wins first prize in letter writing competition
This year, Ho Thi Hieu Hien of Tay Son Junior High School in Da Nang City won the Universal Postal Union (UPU) 20th International Letter Writing Contest. She wrote on the theme "Write a letter to someone and explain why AIDS prevention is important".
