YEN BAI - A forum to promote investment in north-western Viet Nam opened in Yen Bai Province this morning with about 600 participants in attendance.
These included foreign and domestic investors, economic-sector, ministry and international organisation representatives as well as diplomats.
They will be shown the investment opportunities and economic potential of 12 north-western provinces as well as western Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces during the one-day conference.
Participants will also witness the important presentation of investment certificates and the of signing investment co-operation agreements.
"The north-western region has great investment potential," said the Planning and Investment Ministry's Foreign Investment Agency director Do Nhat Hoang.
"But the opportunities have not been effectively exploited."
Although more than 200 projects with total registered capital of US$1.4 billion had been implemented in the provinces, this was a small number measured against the entire country, he said.
"Investors at the forum will be able to use the forum to share experiences and discuss opportunities."
"They will also have the chance to exchange views with government representatives so as to gain a greater understanding of the regional investment environment and policies for the region."
Participants will discuss development of infrastructure for the region's key transport routes and the processing of agri-forestry products this afternoon.
Members of north-western provincial people's committees will lead the discussion.
Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong will deliver a speech setting the forum agenda.
A similar forum in Lao Cai Province in 2008 attracted about 500 participants.
Thirteen projects received investment certificates worth $3 billion at the forum.Source: vnagency.com.vn
